The state currently allocates over $64 million to school safety. Meanwhile, the federal government chips in only $1.25 million.
Sixty-five percent of the state funding, or $42 million, is being spent on school resource officers.
"You have all kinds of scenarios that can take place in schools so the best thing you can do is try to put as many obstacles in the way to not let that happen," said Volusia County Deputy Superintendent Robet Moll.
Other options law makers are considering include bulletproof glass, more guidance counselors and teacher training to prevent problems before they occur.Florida asks federal government for school safety funding
