Louisiana Primary Should Have Little Impact On GOP Race

Saturday's Louisiana primary should have little impact on the GOP presidential race.

Polls show Rick Santorum holding a low, double-digit lead over Mitt Romney as voters prepare to go to the polls.? While Newt Gingrich is forecast to finish third, the former House Speaker has vowed to carry on until the party's national convention.

Just 20 Republican delegates are at stake in the election.? Most of the remaining delegates will be awarded during a party caucus in April.

Outside of areas that hold other elections, turnout is expected to be light.? Only those registered as Republicans will be able to cast votes in the GOP primary.? The Democratic primary features incumbent Barack Obama and three little-known candidates.

Republicans may actually play a larger-than-usual role in electing an at-large member of the New Orleans City Council on Saturday. Turnout by GOP voters in New Orleans could help Stacy Head, who is one of seven candidates vying for the seat once held by Arnie Fielkow who resigned last year.? Head, a Democrat, is running with the endorsement of the Orleans Parish Republican Executive Committee.

In Mandeville, voters will cast ballots in a Mayor's race that features Donald Villere and businessman, Denis Bechac.? Villere is seeking a full term as mayor after serving out the unexpired term of the imprisoned former mayor, Eddie Price.? Villere first won election in March 2010.

The polls will be open from 6AM to 8PM.
